Service

Spence was in Philly this week. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday totally sucked. Mostly because I wanted to reread the Twilight series, and I just wanted the kids to leave me alone. I was just super annoyed and irritated by everyone and everything.

I was called 2 months ago as the 2nd counselor in the Relief Society Presidency. To preface, our ward is mainly over the age of 50 and very settled in their ways. Today I represented the Presidency at a funeral luncheon. I did not plan it, but was conducting at the event. I have felt nervous about my part in this calling and the acceptance of me. I pretty much feel like I was called to be liaison to the younger sisters. Today was so humbling as I felt the respect given me. I say this not to boast in any way, but to share how wonderful the Gospel is. I worked with some very experienced funeral committee ladies, who were in their 70's. Even though I am less than half their age, they came to me for direction and approval. I felt the love of Christ in the experience as we served together for a dear Sister I had never met who had passed on. My miserable week was forgotten in this service.

I also had a sweet experience realizing I made a new friend. Savannah has a new best friend. Her mother and I have know each other since we moved to Bountiful, but she has always been distant and stand-off-ish. She graciously watched Savannah and Maddux for me while I attended the funeral.

When I returned to get the kids, this friend told me she felt like she needed to make me dinner. I was flabbergasted. She felt embarrassed but simply explained she felt I needed dinner, and then sent me home with it. She knew Spence was away and that I had a long day with preparations and service. I told her how kind and great she was. She shyly told me not to tell any one and that she liked to be unseen. She comes across as indifferent and uncaring. But she is neither of those things. I feel humbled to be let in to her safe circle of friends. It is hard to find a kindred spirit who needs you also.

What this new friend does not know is that I did not need dinner, I actually had a ton of left overs from the funeral. What I needed was a friend and to know my family was being watched over. She generously showed me this in her own way. And I am filled with peace, knowing I am a beloved daughter of God. I am so blessed.

I love how the gospel and Relief Society in particular helps us meet people we otherwise wouldn't and helps us grow in new ways. I'm glad there are people looking out for you in Utah. It's nice to know we are all being taken care of via others around the world.

It is interesting how a kind deed can cross the threshold to friendship. Nice story.
