Scarred for life by the Coconut

Cooper had been asking for
over a week to buy a coconut. Apparently the t.v. programs he watches has convinced him that coconut milk is delicious. So while at Smiths, I buy him a coconut and felt like an awesome mom, exposing him to new things.

So Spence and I have the kids at the kitchen counter, letting Cooper use a hammer and nail so we can drain the coconut milk first. Cooper and Savy think this is the best thing ever, and are enthralled with the whole process. Cooper can't wait to take a drink, but quickly made a horrible face and started spitting out the milk. We laugh and think that he just doesn't like it.

Savy is quick to want a spoonful of milk to try. As soon as the spoon hits her lips she is hysterically crying! Spence and I just die laughing. It is unbelievably funny to watch our kids be grossed out. We soon realize something is wrong when Savy doesn't stop crying. Spence decides to try a sip of the milk and the next thing I know he is at the sink gaging and yelling how gross it is.

By now we know coconut milk is gross. But why?
We take the coconut outside and Spence throws it in the street to break it open. What do you know, but the entire coconut meat is moldy rotten! I was instantly thinking I was the worst parent ever! How sad that I let my kids drink untested coconut milk, and would they get sick that night with food poisoning! I felt awful, my kids had trusted me with a new experience and it had all gone terribly wrong. Gratefully the kids had a great time throwing pieces of the coconut in the street until it was shattered in to tiny pieces.

I now hope my kids will still try new foods, and hope that they do not have an aversion to coconut for the rest of their lives...yes, my kids may need therapy, I have scarred them for life!
The first picture is of Cooper trying to cleanse his mouth with his shirt, and Savy crying...looking back, it really was hysterical!

It made her cry??? Too sad and hilarious at the same time! I hope they'll try coconut again. It is pretty funny - as long as they don't get sick!
