To be completely honest this camping trip was an escape for me. It was the first weekend of July and I had been shuttling kids to swimming and Bell camp and working 20-30 hrs a week. I wanted my summer like all the other families vacationing and playing. I was ornery and ready to leave. I told Spence I was going camping and if he wanted to come he could. So he did. I loaded up for us to leave Friday at 3.
We got the last campsite in all of the SLC area on 4th of July weekend. It could have been a pit. I was happy to be out of my house. I wanted to hike and burn wood and swim. Friday night we tried to go exploring but the kids were bored. So they played with some neighbor kids and Maddux and I threw rocks in the river. Spence made us some good hot dogs over the fire.
The Rangers advertised a Scorpion hunt, so at 9 pm Spence, Coop and Savy took off to hunt scorpions. They loved tramping through the dark in a large group avoiding cactus and sharing a black light. It was a great adventure.
The following morning the kids were dying to get in the lake. We went over to our prime beach front and played in the sand but the wind made it so cold.
We decided to pack up camp and load up. The kids had seen the water trampoline the night before and were begging to rent it. Spence and I gave in and we got one hour after lunch. It was the best idea. The little kids and big kids all had fun. Maggie and Maddux did not sleep well the night before so we packed up and headed home by 4 pm. We had the site reserved for Saturday as well. I had gotten my escape fix and was good to leave.
Our family of 6 is so much work. Just feeding and cleaning and entertaining them is exhausting. We do have fun together and moments like these remind me that it is worth it. As long as I get to escape once in a while.
